Mickey Mouse Lines


After reading about 'lines' in the textbook, I wanted to create a composition that had movement and energy.

I found that there are several techniques to help create movement and energy and wanted to incorporate as many as possible into my drawing:

- fluid lines
- diagonal lines
- curvy lines
- swelling lines
- calligraphic lines

I chose to redraw this picture of Mickey Mouse, originally done by Walt Disney artists Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, because of its "fluid lines."



First, I practiced drawing a series of "diagonal lines" (on a seperate sheet of paper) and saw that it looked like rain. It reminded me of a comic book. (I originally wanted to add lightening in the sky for more diagonals, but I thought it might be inapproproate for Mickey Mouse.


Then, I was inspired by one composition in the textbook of "curvy lines." I noticed that the lines had a subtle "swelling" to them, and so I decided to make it into a ribbon by ussing gradation. I used the ribbon for the border.


Finally, I decided to use my signature as the next best thing to "calligraphic lines" (hehe).

PROJECT 1: SAUL BASS ASSIGNMENT



Objective

To learn design principles through exploration and experimentation. To utilize the grid as a logical visual organization tool.

Secondary objectives
To utilize Adobe Illustrator as a layout and production tool.

Description
Design a museum screening handout about influential designer Saul Bass for Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA) in New York City.
• size: 8.5 x 11 inches (one page)
• font: Franklin Gothic (you may only use two font sizes and two weights)
• ink: black only
• include: client-provided text and images (use a minimum of 3 images)

Diamond Spiral


When I drew this picture, I was inspired by the following quote:
"A spiral can increase energy in a circular format or add movement to a rectangular composition." (Launching the Imagination, p.78)

To achieve this, I drew a rectangular frame with four diamond frames within it. Inside each diamond frame is a spiral.

My goal was to have symmetry, energy, confusion, and stability all at once. Since the spiral creates energy and movement, I drew horizontal stripes in the background (to reintroduce stability).

Fun at the Candy Shop



While reading the textbook about rectilinear and curvilinear shapes, I became intrigued with how curvilinear shapes, especially circles, "retain their individuality, even when they are partially concealed by other shaped."

With this drawing, I wanted to experiment with circles and partially covering them up. I also tried to use contrast between black and white and also experiment with shapes.

The black stripe in the "candy corn trail" makes a wavy line.

Unity Melting into Variety


This is my version of Unity and Variety.

After reading the text book I see that unity and variety are so important to each other. While reading, I imagined unity "melting" into variety, so I did a gradient to unite the two.

To create unity I used font, proximity, gradient, and alignment.
To create variety I used several patterns in the text, and texture in the background.

Cool School

I enjoy Parkland
I attended a four year university but I never knew that a community college could be so nice.

I enjoy GDS 108 so far. I like that it is practical and hands on (not theoretical only).
I think it's awesome that the class is taught in the computer lab. It saves time and helps to motivate me. I think that having the computers in class will help me stay engaged and focused. I feel that GDS-108 will help build my confidence in creativity and will urge me to follow my inclination toward Graphic Design.
